PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polypeptide having an activity for synthesizing a hyaluronic acid oligomer, to provide a method for producing the polypeptide and to provide a method for producing the hyaluronic acid oligomer utilizing the polypeptide.

SOLUTION: The polypeptide comprises at least a part of a motif represented by the following amino acid sequence V(D/I)DGXX(N/E/D)(T/D)D (wherein, X denotes an optional amino acid residue) in a hyaluronic acid synthase, the motif represented by QXXRW and a region sandwiched therebetween and has the activity for synthesizing the hyaluronic acid oligomer.
