<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a transfer material from soiling by toner and to prevent occurrence of transfer failure due to deficiency of transfer bias even when a recording medium whose size is smaller than an image size or recording media different in direction are used by a mistake, etc. <P>SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus, which is provided with a transfer means 15 which is installed to be freely nearer to and away from image carriers 11 and 14 and transfers a visual image to the recording medium by applying electric charge for transferring by being in contact with the recording medium P, a control means 8 is provided with a comparing means 9 for comparing the size of the recording medium P in the feeding direction judged based on information from a detecting means 5 with the previously recongnized size of the recording medium in the feeding direction. As the result of comparison, when the size in the feeding direction of the recording medium P is smaller than the size of the previously recongnized size of the recording medium in the feeding direction, the transfer means 15 is made away from the recording medium P before the end of the recording medium P passes through the transferring means 15. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
