An internal combustion engine has a cylinder head 2 and a cylinder head cover 3, which are sealed with one another by means of a gasket 4. The cylinder head 2 has at least one cut-out 22 extending through the wall 21 of the cylinder head 2 at the joint surface facing the cylinder head cover 3. At a point incorporating a cut-out 22, the gasket 4 has a projection 43 which sealingly closes the cut-out 22, and at least one side-face projecting lip 44, 45 is provided on a side face of the projection 43 which engages laterally round an edge 23, 24 of the co-operating cut-out 22.
