PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high mol.wt. polyarylene-based polymer by polymerizing one or more kinds of two releasing group-having arylene-based monomers in the presence of a zero-valent nickel complex. SOLUTION: This method for producing the polymer having one or more kinds of repeating units represented by general formula (2): -Ar<SB>1</SB>- (Ar<SB>1</SB>is an arylene group, a divalent heterocyclic group, or a divalent aromatic amine group) comprises polymerizing one or more monomers represented by general formula (1): X<SB>1</SB>-Ar<SB>1</SB>-X<SB>2</SB>(X<SB>1</SB>and X<SB>2</SB>are each independently a releasing group) in the presence of a zero-valent nickel complex in a solvent substantially comprising an ester-based solvent.
