PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device, such as a digital camera, with discharge mode for the purpose of reactivating a secondary battery, suppress degradation in the performance of the secondary battery, prevent malfunction caused by a user, and further accomplish reduction in the cost of the device. SOLUTION: A camera 10 is operated on power supplied from an external power source connected with a battery 26 or a power input terminal 28. For the battery 26, a secondary battery, such as a nickel metal-hydrate battery, is used, and the camera 10 is provided with discharge mode for forcedly discharging the battery 26. When discharge mode is established according to an instruction from a user, part of the circuitry of the camera 10 is utilized as a load circuit, and power is consumed. A main CPU 18 controls operating frequency, the refresh rate of memory 50, or the number of circuit blocks to be operated, and thereby adjusts the amount by which the battery 26 is discharged.
