PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high quality liquid crystal display element of which the liquid crystal panel is prevented from deteriorating even when the liquid crystal panel, used as a light valve of a projector etc., is operated under high temperature and high humidity environment and a projection display device using the liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element is constructed by having a liquid crystal layer 16 interposed between a pair of substrates comprising a TFT array substrate 11 and a counter substrate 12 laminated each other with a sealing material 15 so as to be opposite to each other with a specified gap, making the sealing material 15 contain a nonconductive filler with an average particle diameter less than 0.5μm, setting refractive index anisotropyΔn of the liquid crystal material used for the liquid crystal layer 16 at room temperature to be 0.16 or more, and setting a distance between the TFT array substrate 11 and the counter substrate 12, a cell gap d, to be 3μm or less.
