PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor laser device which has a long life and has a large degree of freedom in designing the structure thereof. SOLUTION: The semiconductor laser device comprises a refractive index variable region 18 and a laser diode oscillation region 19 adjacent to the refractive index variable region 18 in the laser emitting direction. By injecting carriers with the injection level varying in time into the refractive index variable region 18, the refractive index of the refractive index variable region 18 changes in time.
