PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel perylene dyestuff which shows high solubility and high dichroism. SOLUTION: This perylene dyestuff is one whose free acid form is a compound of general formula (3) or (4). [In the formulas, E and E' are each independently an aromatic hydrocarbon group which can be substituted, an aromatic heterocyclic group which can be substituted, or a hydrogen atom; F and F' are each independently a 1-10C alkylene which can be substituted; G is a group whose free acid form is -SO<SB>3</SB>H, -COOH, -OPO<SB>3</SB>H<SB>2</SB>or -PO<SB>3</SB>H<SB>2</SB>; n is an integer of 1-10; if n is 2 or larger, two or more Gs in the molecule can be the same or different from each other; X<SP>1</SP>-X<SP>4</SP>and Y<SP>1</SP>-Y<SP>4</SP>are each independently a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a hydroxy group, an amino group, -OR<SB>1</SB>or -NHR<SB>2</SB>(wherein R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently an alkyl group which can be substituted, or an aromatic hydrocarbon group which can be substituted); -Z- and -Z'- are each independently -CH<SB>2</SB>-, -S-, -S-S-, -SO<SB>2</SB>-, -NH-, -N(CH<SB>3</SB>)- or a functional group of formula (5)].
