The motor control method involves starting a control pulse for a pulse width modulation signal (SP) depending on a periodic clock signal (ST) and ending the control pulse when the drive current exceeds a defined reference value, whereby the pulse width modulation signal is positively shut off for a defined minimum switching time during each cycle of the clock signal. The PWM signal is preferably produced by performing a logical AND operation on the clock signal and a pulse selection signal (SV). An independent claim is also included for a control unit for producing a drive current for an electric motor.
