PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone which reduces by-products. SOLUTION: The method for producing 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone comprises a step (1) of reacting ethylenediamine, urea, and water at normal temperatures to 250°C to obtain a reaction product, a step (2) of cooling the reaction product, a step (3) of adding a solvent and a hydrogen-withdrawing agent to the cooled reaction product, and a step (4) of further adding a methyl group-donating agent to perform methylation.
