<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce flow noise generated in opening of an opening/closing valve disposed to a bypass pipe, in a muffler for an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: In the muffler, the inside of a housing 1 is partitioned off into an inlet chamber 1f, an outlet chamber 1g, and a buffer chamber 1h by partition walls 1d, 1e. The inlet chamber 1f communicates with the outlet chamber 1g through an inner pipe 3A, the buffer chamber 1h, and an inner pipe 3B and though the bypass pipe 5. The opening/closing valve 6 is disposed to an end part of the bypass pipe 5 projecting into the outlet chamber 1g so that the open/close valve 6 closes the bypass pipe 5 when differential pressure between the inlet chamber 1f and the outlet chamber 1g is a predetermined value or less, and the valve is opened when the differential pressure exceeds the predetermined value. A shutoff member 7 is disposed in the bypass pipe 5 near the opening/closing valve 6 and upstream of the opening/closing valve to shut off the inside of the bypass pipe 5. The shutoff member 7 has a plurality of through holes (not shown) for making an upstream part communicate with a lower part of the shutoff member 7 in the bypass pipe 5. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
