PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading method for measuring the density on a film basis, without the need for exclusive density measurement sensor or making the resolution of an image acquired by an area imaging element deteriorated. SOLUTION: A film mask with a reading aperture of the same size as the size of an image frame is provided to a carrier base. A photo film is stopped so that a film base region between a first image frame and a second image frame (inter-image-frame) comes to the middle of the reading aperture of the film mask. Image is read from a region on the photo film exposed from the read aperture. A density histogram is obtained from the read image data, and the film base density is calculated.
