PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigation system and a method for presenting an alternative route allowing presentation of an alternative route without confusing a user. SOLUTION: When because of the occurrence of traffic congestion in a section indicated by a double-pointed arrow 412 on a guided route 411, an alternative route 431 which branches off the guided route at an approaching intersection 422 (e), a navigation image guiding the current guided route 411 is displayed before passing through the intersection 422 (a). After passing through the intersection 422, when the position after passing through the intersection 422 is on the alternative route 431, an alternative route presentation image which indicates the alternative route 431 with an alternative route figure 421 is displayed (f), and when the position after passing through the intersection 422 is not on the alternative route 431, a navigation image guiding the current guided route 411 with a guided route figure 403 (g) or an alternative route presentation image which indicates an alternative route searched for according to the position after passing through the intersection 422 with the alternative route figure 421 is displayed (h).
