PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reading apparatus capable of adjusting a reference time index when an actual time index required for a time from the detection of the head end of a document until the detection of the tail end thereof does not match a reference time index due to the paper slippage or the like of a roller provided on a document transfer path, thereby eliminating the necessity of the maintenance of the roller of the transfer path as much as possible. SOLUTION: A first document position detecting sensor DSS detects the head end and tail end of the document. A control apparatus 42 measures an actual time index between the head end detection of the document and tail end detection by the sensor DSS. The control apparatus 42 determines the length of the document in a transferring direction on the basis of the comparison of the actual time index and the reference time index.
