PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cooling apparatus for a steel strip which has a high gas spouting velocity from a nozzle for obtaining a high cooling rate and has low resistance coefficient of the nozzle for realizing a compact gas circulating facility. SOLUTION: The cooling apparatus 2 for a steel strip cools the moving steel strip 12 by arranging a projecting nozzle 4 on the surface of a cooling box 3 and spouting cooling medium from the projecting nozzle 4, wherein the plurality of projecting nozzles 4 keeping the distance from the distal end part of the nozzle to the steel strip surface at 30-100 mm are projected from the the surface of the cooling box 3, A/a of the projecting nozzle is set so as to satisfy expression of 2≤A/a≤9 (A: opening hole cross sectional area at the base part of the nozzle, a: the opening hole cross sectional area at the distal end part of the nozzle) and the distance from the surface of the cooling box 3 to the distal end part of the projecting nozzle 4 is set to be 150-200 mm.
