PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a film image reader that obtains reading signals of good S/N from the dark portions of images recorded on a translucent film that allows little illuminating light to pass through. SOLUTION: A light source device that illuminates film is provided with the function by which it can control the amount of illuminating light to a plurality of positions, both horizontally and vertically. The dark part of the film is detected as horizontal and vertical data from signals obtained when the entire film is uniformly illuminated and an optical image on the film is picked up by an image pickup device. The data on the dark part detected are reversed and sent to a lighting unit. The film is illuminated again and an image is picked up with the image pickup device as the amount of illumination is increased for the dark part according to the data. After an image pickup signal where the level of the dark part of the film has increased has been obtained, only the increased level of the image pick signal of the dark part is lowered to suppress the noise of the dark part at the same time for better S/N.
