A device is disclosed to invalidate banknotes in a unit equipped for the storage thereof, comprising an ignition unit ( 15 ) placed in the equipped unit ( 3 ) in a position adjacent to the banknotes ( 4 ) and suitable to generate a flame producing on the banknotes ( 4 ) localized burns ( 4 a) of a pre-established and identifiable type, the ignition unit ( 15 ) being controlled by activation means ( 16 ) sensitive to alarm situations.
