PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect failure of a cylinder deactivation control by a simple method. SOLUTION: A control device for an internal combustion engine provided with a mechanism for performing cylinder deactivation control deactivating part of a plurality of cylinders is provided with a means provided in an intake system of the internal combustion engine and detecting quantity of intake air to the internal combustion engine, a means detecting a deceleration state of a vehicle equipped with the internal combustion engine, and a means outputting a command to start cylinder deactivation control to the internal combustion engine when deceleration state is detected. The control device compares detected quantity of intake air and a threshold value established based on rotation speed of the internal combustion engine after the command for starting cylinder deactivation control is output to the internal combustion engine. When the detected quantity of intake air is the threshold value or greater, it is determined that some failure occurs in cylinder deactivation control. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
