PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer latex for paper coating excellent in coating operation nature, excellent in printability such as blank paper gloss, printing gloss and surface strengths, having the above superior printability in a wide range of printing speed, and capable of giving especially a coated paper having high wet pick strength. SOLUTION: The polymer latex for paper coating is obtained by performing the emulsion polymerization of monomer components (mentioned below) and has a mean particle diameter of≤100 nm. The monomer components consist of (a) 20-80 wt% of an aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, (b) 0.1-35 wt% of a vinylcyanide monomer, (c) 0.01-10 wt% of an amide group-containing ethylenic unsaturated monomer, (d) 0.1-3 wt% of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid monomer, (e) 0-1 wt% of an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid monomer (wherein [(d)+(e)]≤3 wt% and (d)>(e)), and (f) 0-79.8 wt% of other monomer copoymerizable with the above (a)-(e) components (wherein (a)+(b)+(c)+(d)+(e)=100 wt%).
