PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain redundancy in files stored in a system in which a plurality of file servers are connected through a network without using a centralized control unit. SOLUTION: Each domain ND in the file storage system 10 is provided with the file server FS, a monitoring server WS, and a client CL which are connected with a LAN. When detecting that trouble occurs in other file server existing in the system, one file server FS considers that redundancy of files stored in the troubled file server FS is degraded, and determines whether or not the file server becomes a subject server to recover its redundancy. When determining that it becomes the subject server, the file server FS as the origin of copied file and the file server FS as the destination of copied file are selected under designated conditions, and a file identical to the file in which the redundancy is degraded is copied from the original server for copying to the destination server on the basis of this selection.
