PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To find a heat radiation amount as one of parameters showing states in a cylinder, which is an important element for controlling an internal combustion engine although it has not been accurately found till now, and control the parameter for the operation of the internal combustion engine in accordance with the heat radiation amount. SOLUTION: The heat radiation amount Q of gas from the cylinder of the internal combustion engine 1 to the outside is found and the parameter for the internal combustion engine is controlled in accordance with the heat radiation amount. The parameter is at least one of a ignition timing, a fuel injection amount, a valve timing, an EGR amount, a gas turbulence amount, an intake air amount, an intake air temperature, and a cooled water temperature. The parameter for the internal combustion engine can be corrected in accordance with the heat radiation amount, and thus the worsening of a combustion condition is suppressed. The heat radiation amount is found in accordance with work Wi for adiabatic compression as assumed in a predetermined section and actual work Wr actually measured in the predetermined section, in accordance with a heat flow rate q and a cylinder surface area S, or from a Woschini heat transfer rate model expression.
