A sendzimir type mill has its housing formed in two halves which are hinged at one end, and urged together with a force which exceeds the rolling force tending to urge the halves apart. Each half houses a working roll supported by two series of backing rolls and a number of casters. An hydraulic cylinder 7 is attached to one half 2 and stresses tie rods 11 and 12 which are attached to the upper half 1 and to a platen 9. Adjustable ribbed blocks 4a and 4b are bolted on to correspondingly ribbed portions of the halves 1 and 2, and are recessed to house a hinge pin 4e. An hydraulic cylinder 42 moves a lever 40 to rotate eccentrics 38 and 39 and thus adjust the roll pass. The eccentrics may be geared together or actuated by separate cylinders. Fig. 5 shows how the working rolls 46 are supported by first backing rolls 47, intermediate backing rolls 48, and casters 49. The casters are spaced along shafts 50 by saddles 51 which bear against the mill housing halves. Saddles 53 across the width of the rolls are each adjustable by a bolt 52 so that the crown of the working rolls can be adjusted. The central intermediate backing roll is driven in each half of the mill. The work roll and first backing rolls of each half are movable axially in carriages 65, 67, or 66, 68, cross pieces 71, 69, and 72, 70, joining the ends of these carriages. Screws 75 and 76 are used for this axial adjustment. The carriages are provided with perforations for forming jets for a lubricant and coolant. Rolling materials of different widths is facilitated by providing the ends of the rolls of one or both of the intermediate series with slight taper reliefs, adjustment of the rolls being by relative longitudinal movement. |
