An air depolarized cell has an active carbon electrode 4 moulded from powder by use of a binder and subjected to waterproofing, the carbon electrode having an ion-permeable separator 22 disposed on its surface and in contact with an electrolyte 21 of a solution of 35 to 45% by weight alkali metal zincate in water, and a porous zinc electrode 13 moulded from zinc powder and having a porosity of 30 to 70%. Sodium or potassium zincate are used, with added phosphate of potassium to prevent oxidation corrosion of the zinc, or potassium silicate, potassium polyacrylate, or sodium polyacrylate may be added. Electrode 13 is a nickel-plated iron grid 15 with perforations 14 and zinc powder compression moulded with the grid. Alternatively a tin-plated grid is inserted in a pocket of perforated glass cloth and powdered zinc filled in, the electrode then being amalgamated. Other alternatives are amalgamated powdered zinc moulded with polystyrene, sintered powdered zinc, or powdered zinc in a pocket of perforated glass cloth. Carbon electrode 4 has a binder of polystyrene in benzene, is moulded, and the benzene then expelled, or the electrode is of charcoal, inorganic activator and tar pitch as binder, paraffin being used for waterproofing. Separator 22 is glass cloth or vinylon fibres, for example two layers of polyvinyl alcohol and polyamide fibres. Battery casing 1 of polystyrene has a cover 3 adhesively secured thereto with acrylic ester adhesive. Projection 5 from electrode 4 is secured to cover 3 with epoxy resin adhesive. An electrode cover 8 of polystyrene is secured to cover 3. Air enters via opening 9 in cover 8. A plug 18 in electrolyte filling port 19 has a gas vent 20. A detachable cover 24 of transparent polystyrene covers the battery body 25, which is suspended from a wall by hangers (27), (Fig. 3, not shown). A resinous dispersion of zinc powder in epoxy resin is applied on the surface of grid 15. The powdered zinc particles used for electrode 13 may be coated with a porous resin film, e.g. polyethylene, ethyl-cellulose or methyl-cellulose.
