A mechanical thrower 34 for spreading green malt over the floor 12 of a kiln is suspended from the roof 10 of the kiln by a substantially vertical support arm 28 connected at its upper end to a hinge 26, having a horizontal pivot axis and mounted on the upper ring 24 of a rotary mount 22 for rotation about a vertical axis. The rotary mount is supported on pedestals 18 above the level of the roof 10 within a chamber such that when the mechanical thrower is not in use it may be raised about the hinge 26 by means of a winch 44 and a cable 50 running over pulleys 46, 48 into the chamber which may then be sealed or shut off from the kiln by a door &c. The arm 28 is offset from the rotational axis of the rotary mount to permit the raisure of the thrower. An arm 32 is attached to the upper end of the arm 28 and rests on the upper ring 24 diametrically opposite the hinge 26, and cooperates with stops (not shown) to limit the rotation of the rotary mount to 360 degrees. The malt is supplied to a hopper 36 on the mechanical thrower by a shoot 16 having an extension 40 with a handrail 42 attached to the lower end by means of which an operator may rotate the thrower. Electric supply for the mechanical thrower is provided through a cable 52 extending through the hollow support arm 28. |
