PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a footstep cleaning device for an escalator capable of cleaning by sucking refuse on a cleat surface of the footstep without stopping the escalator nor hindering passengers utilizing the escalator and capable of reducing wastage of a cleaning tool. SOLUTION: A reversing part of a plurality of footsteps 2 endlessly connected to each other for circular running is provided with a suction opening 5 freely to be brought in contact with the cleat surface 2c of the footstep 2 and freely to separate from there. A motor 11 for moving the suction opening 5 in directions for bringing it in contact with the cleat surface 2c of the footstep 2 or separating from there is provided in a frame 10, and a cleaner main body 9 is connected to the suction opening 5 through a nozzle 6, a pipe 7 and a flexible hose 8. A control device 12 is provided to control the cleaner main body 9 and the motor 10, and the control device 12 controls so that the suction opening 5 is positioned without a contact with the cleat surface 2c of the footstep 2 in usual and that the suction opening 5 is moved to the cleat surface 2c of the footstep 2 through the motor 11, while continuing operation of the escalator, and the cleaner main body 9 is driven to suck the refuse on the cleat surface 2c of the footstep 2 when cleaning.
