PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a garbage fermentation and deodorization apparatus and a heat exchanger which can deodorize malodor gas produced in a garbage treatment with good thermal efficiency, can reduce running cost, and can easily be installed in a city district. SOLUTION: In the apparatus, malodor gas produced in a garbage fermentation tank 2 is preheated via the compact and lightweight heat exchanger 5 having a gas flowing-in passage 7 and a gas flowing-out passage 9 adjacently juxtaposedly disposed. After preheating, the malodor gas is heated up to a prescribed temperature by a burner 6 of liquid fuel, catalytically decomposed by passing it through a catalyst layer 8 to deodorize. The deodorized exhaust gas is cooled down to a prescribed temperature via the heat exchanger 5, and a part of the exhaust gas is recycled to a garbage fermentation tank 2 to promote and maintain fermentation of the garbage.
