A powertrain comprises: an engine equipped with a catalyst converter (or an exhaust-gas purification catalyst) capable of purifying exhaust gas; and an ISG which assists the engine with torque. The powertrain is controlled by a control unit. The control unit retards ignition timing of the engine to the decreased combustion fluctuation region, so as to promote the light-off of the exhaust-gas purification catalyst, during idling within a predetermined period after cold start. At the same time, the control unit controls the ISG to assist the engine with torque, so as to maintain the operational stability of the engine. When the engine shifts to the non-idling state, the ignition timing is changed so as to jump across the increased combustion fluctuation region to a timing near MBT.
