The method involves determining a presence of a critical situation, and instantaneously maintaining or decreasing existing steering reduction ratio if the presence of the critical situation is determined. The decrease of the reduction ratio is suppressed if the critical situation is ended. The reduction ratio is decreased in a renovation phase extending in a time for returning to the ratio corresponding to current speed of a vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a steering device with variable steering reduction ratio for a motor vehicle.
