PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a raw material for a coating composition which can sharply improve weather resistance, water resistance, durability and transparency by very simply making silica disperse into a water-soluble polymer stably and uniformly and by improving the compatibility sharply, and to provide a coating composition using it. SOLUTION: The raw material for the coating composition is composed of a water dispersion of silica having a silanol group and a polymer that has an amide carbonyl group and is made water-soluble by the amide carbonyl group.
