PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rolling bearing unit for supporting wheels having a long service life even in an environment easy to corrode. SOLUTION: The rolling bearing unit 1 for supporting wheels is provided with an internal member formed by fitting a second inner ring 3 on the peripheral surface of a first inner ring 2 for integral fixation, an outer ring 4a having raceway surfaces 10a and 10b opposite to raceway surfaces 7a and 7b of the inner rings 2 and 3 and arranged outside the internal member, and a plurality of lines of rolling bodies 5 slidably arranged between the raceway surfaces 7a and 7b of the internal member and the raceway surfaces 10a and 10b of the outer ring 4. The second inner ring 3 is formed from an alloy steel containing 3-15 mass% of chrome, and hoop stress to be applied to the peripheral surface of a step part 12 of the second inner ring 3 is set at 150-300 MPa.
