Alcohols are prepared by reacting an olefine with hydrogen and carbon monoxide in an alkaline medium in the presence of a catalyst comprising a complex of a Group VIII metal and at least one phosphorus containing ligand. The ligand is preferably a phosphine of formula R3P in which R is hydrocarbon group with up to 18 carbon atoms. The alkaline medium may be an inorganic base or an amine and having a pH of at least 8. The reaction temperature may be from 150 DEG to 190 DEG C. and the contact time from 30 to 120 minutes. The pressure may be from 400 to 700 p.s.i.g. Aldehydes are also obtained as by-products. Specifications 988,941, 988,945 and 1,002,428 are referred to. |
