<p>A papermaking dewatering broad nip calender has a top cylinder with a flexible mantle (3) rotating in contact with a lower rigid cylinder, close contact being maintained by a shoe (4) within the upper cylinder. The upper cylinder is exposed to an array of water jets (10) and has a hydrophilic surface (12). The hydrophilic mantle (12) has a microstructure and rotates under the influence of an electrostatic field generation assembly (14, 15) and a wetting agent spray (16). The main spray (10, 1) impinges on the flexible mantle at an angle of less than 90 degrees.</p> |
