FIELD: metallurgy. ^ SUBSTANCE: the invention is presents a method of a local surface nitriding of items and is pertaining to the field of metallurgy, in particular, to a thermochemical surface treatment of materials by a diffusion and may be used for a surface hardening of components of machines by nitriding and production of the local coatings of the given depth. The offered method provides for placement on the chosen area of an item surface of the saturating patch piece pressed from a powdered material, realization of a diffusive saturation of the surface by heating at a contact pressure of the saturating patch piece pressed to the treated area of the saturating patch piece. The saturating patch piece is produced porous and gas-permeable by pressing out of a titanium powder with following sintering and thermal treatment with a volumetric saturation in the active medium of nitrogen. At that the height of the saturating patch piece choose previously from the following condition: H >= K*d*h, where H is a height of the saturating patch piece; K - the factor taking into account performances of the porosity and the powder material, 1/mm; d - the size of the powder granules, mm; h - depth of the nitriding coating, mm.
