PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide spacers for an STN liquid crystal display element, which do not disturb alignment of a liquid crystal not only in an initial state but also in the case in which external force is added between substrates and which are excellent in spraying property, and to provide the STN liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: The spacer for the STN liquid crystal display element has a surface layer formed of a polymer composed of only one or two or more kinds of acrylic monomer (a) expressed by a general formula (1) on the outermost surface of a base fine particle, wherein at least a part of the acrylic monomer (a) is selected from acrylic monomers (b) expressed by a general formula (2).
