PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grinding method of gems for contributing to the realization of numerically controlled polishing the cut surface of the gem, by starting grinding work by making sure of directionality for grinding the gems. SOLUTION: This grinding method grinds the gems 60 by using a numerical control machine tool, and performs normal grinding of the cut surface, while feeding a work in the low direction of grinding resistance on a grinding wheel surface of a grinding wheel 22, by determining the small direction of the grinding resistance on the basis of a measuring result, by successively measuring the grinding resistance on a plurality of respective trial positions when trying grinding of a work on a grinding wheel surface of the rotating grinding wheel 22.
