<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup unit which can be adaptive to high density media using violet-blue laser, has simple constitution and is easily miniaturized and is made low-cost. <P>SOLUTION: A blue laser light source D1 emits a laser beam L1 of a wavelength of 405 nm band. A beam shaping element BL shapes the laser beam L1 emitted from the blue laser light source D1 so that the laser beam L1 is scattered in ellipse-shaped light intensity distribution. A polarization beam splitter BS reflects the laser beam L1 shaped by the beam shaping element BL toward an objective lens OL by a polarization separation film PC being in a contact state with air.
