PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device in which a turn-on time point of a first lamp is be consistent with a start time point or an end time point of an SSP in application of a scan backlight system, which achieves an optimal driving and reduced power consumption, and a driving method thereof. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is driven by the inclusion of a step in which a first control signal changed in phases after a delay for the prescribed time is generated in correspondence to the application of a vertical synchronous signal, a step in which a scan pulse is applied to gate lines in correspondence to the phase change of the first control signal, a step in which the prescribed data is applied to data lines in correspondence to the phase change of the second control signal, and a step in which the back lights are controlled by the phase change of the first control signal or the second control signal.
