<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a touch panel device capable of improving temporal resolution for detecting a contact position with high precision. <P>SOLUTION: In starting the device, for example, a burst wave is applied to an excitation element 32 for exciting a surface acoustic wave, and the excited surface acoustic wave is propagated to a substrate 1. The propagated surface acoustic wave is received by a reception element 33, change in the dimension of the reception signal in the reception element 33 is acquired, and the number of burst waves (application frequency) is decided for maximizing the dimension of the reception signal.
