The present invention relates to a handheld device for data input by a user comprising a body (1) adapted to be held by a user, a handle (2) attached to and movable in relation to the body (1) for the selection of symbols by a user, whereby the body (1) and the handle (2) have a common longitudinal axis (3) and whereby the handle (2) is movable along the longitudinal axis (3) of the device (10) and rotatable around said longitudinal axis (3) for scrolling through selectable symbols and for selecting a symbol. The present invention further relates to a device for data input by a user comprising a body (1) fixed to an electronic equipment, a handle (2) attached to and movable in relation to the body (1) for the selection of symbols by a user, whereby the body (1) and the handle (2) have a common longitudinal axis (3) and whereby the handle (2) is movable along the longitudinal axis (3) of the device (10) and rotatable around said longitudinal axis (3) for scrolling through selectable symbols and for selecting a symbol.
