<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector by which illumination light can be used without waste according to a screen shape and a liquid crystal panel can be efficiently illuminated. <P>SOLUTION: The cross-sectional shapes of rod integrators 21c, 23c, and 25c of respective colors, that is, the contours of their emission ports OP are made similar to the contours of the projected areas 31g of liquid crystal light valves 31, 33, and 35 of the respective colors. In addition, the sizes of the emission ports OP are made slightly larger than those of the projected areas 31g located opposite to the corresponding emission ports OP. Thus, uniform illumination light emitted from the emission ports OP of the rod integrators 21c, 23c, and 25c can be made incident on the projected areas 31g of the liquid crystal light valves 31, 33, and 35 of the respective colors without loss and without damaging uniformity.
