Process for the preparation of a magnesium salt of a substituted sulfinyl heterocyclic compound

In the present invention, there is described a novel process for the preparation of a magnesium salt of the general formula I of a substituted sulfinyl heterocyclic compound containing an imidazole moiety. The process is carried out by mixing the substituted heterocyclic compound of the general formula I with a weak base having pKa value ranging from 7 to 12 and a magnesium source. The base and the magnesium source are selected to result in residues that are easy to remove during the reaction. So prepared compounds are useful in medicine where they can be employed as proton pump inhibitors or as He+Ke+ATPase inhibitors.
