PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal element containing a pigment compound having a high absorptivity coefficient, a sharp hue, a high order parameter and a high solubility. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal composition comprises a liquid crystal and a compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>3</SB>, R<SB>4</SB>, R<SB>5</SB>, R<SB>6</SB>and R<SB>7</SB>are each independently a hydrogen atom or a substituent, and X is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom).
