PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such a method for handling defects on a recording medium that deteriorate an adaptive bit recovery processing. SOLUTION: During bit recovery from the recording medium, this method for handling the defects on the recording medium includes a step of processing a data stream (hf) read from the recording medium by an adaptive bit recovery means (7), and storing fallback values for the adaptive bit recovery means (7) in fallback registers (16, 17) during processing the data stream (hf), and a step of updating the adaptive bit recovery means (7) with stored fallback values in order to recover from mistaken adaptation, or to restart after processing the defects.
