PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for adjusting an optical pickup device by which the position of a photodetector in a direction X can easily and corrctly be adjusted, and to provide the optical pickup device adjusted by the method. SOLUTION: The optical pickup device has the photodetector 7 divided into at least two photodetection regions E and F. Reflected light from a recording medium is divided into two portions of reflected light 8b and reflected light 8a, the photodetector 7 is moved in either one direction of the direction X in the state where the reflected light 8b and the reflected light 8a are photodetected in the photodetection regions E and F, respectively, and the photodetector 7 is returned back from a place where an output signal of the photodetection region E or F is changed by a prescribed distance.
