PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical shaft engine, effectively preventing the leakage of oil, having high mounting rigidity on a working machine and allowing easy maintenance and inspection. SOLUTION: The vertical shaft engine comprises a crank shaft 9 extending in the vertical direction and a crank case 1 including an oil pan 2. An upper face 1a of the crank case 1 is located above a crank web 14A on the upper side out of a pair of crank webs 14A, 14B of the crank shaft 9, and a crank case cover 3 is mounted on the upper face 1a for covering the crank case 1.
