<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon material for adsorbing a polar gas such as ammonia to effectively utilize industrial waste and a method of manufacturing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The carbon material containing ≥10 mass% carbon, ≥30 mass% oxygen wherein the mass of oxygen is larger than that of carbon is manufactured by feeding a plant base raw material 11 containing ≥30 mass% carbon into a tightly closed vessel 12, heating it at 200-700°C in a non-oxygen atmosphere, supplying oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas so that the concentration of oxygen in the tightly closed vessel 12 is over zero to <20 vol.% at that temperature, heat-calcining it to carbonize, and then stopping the supply of oxygen to the tightly closed vessel 12 with the stoppage of heating to cool the inside of the tightly closed vessel 12. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
