In removing dust and rust from a gas the gas is sprayed with liquid from a nozzle 15 and passed upwardly through a bed 12 of fibrous material at a velocity in excess of that which prevents flooding of the bed, the gas/ liquid mixture is deflected downwardly by a baffle 16 and separated into a slurry withdrawn at 19 and a cleaned gas drawn off at 18. The fibrous material may be a knitted fabric. It may be fabricated from filaments having diameters between 0.5 and 16 mils and the packing density of the bed may be between 1 and 20 lb/ft<SP>3</SP> with a said fraction between 80 to 99%.
