The turbocharger system for an engine includes a control operating by measuring the pressure of the gas produced by the turbine. A reference pressure is determined, and used to establish a safe operating limit for the unit. The system for control of a turbocharged engine provides protection against excess speed and pressure in the turbocharger (3) and potential damage to the engine (1). The process includes calculation of a reference pressure, and estimation of a pressure limit, by means of measurement of air flow through the compressor, and the maximum compression rate allowed for this air flow. A reduction in the reference pressure is made if the pressure limit is lower than the reference pressure. The calculation of the reference pressure may be made independently of the temperature and pressure of the air, but alternatively a correction can be made for both the temperature and pressure of the air entering the compressor.
|
