The two-sided drive seat adjustment mechanism has a ring gear (1) with teeth on inside (11) and outside (12) engaging double-armed pawls (3,81,82). It has an elongated drive lever (2) pivoting on a central axis. Each pawl has two sets of teeth (31,32) and (83,84). The locking arrangement (8) has a transmission lug (23) on the drive lever which can engage one or other of two stop surfaces (86,87) on the outside pawl. The assembly includes a friction brake (4) with a pair of flexible arms (46,47) engaging the inner teeth.
