Lumps of ice are fed through an opening in the top (24) into a comminuter (2) consisting of a part-cylindrical drum (5) containing a rotor with tines (6) for breaking up the ice. The drum has a flange (22) with bolts (23) fastened to a flange (14) on top of a lower drum (3). The ice falls onto a lower rotor (4) with ridges between longitudinal grooves. The lower drum acts a delivery module (1) and has a longitudinal channel at the bottom through which comminuted ice is discharged. There are small air release apertures (11) in the walls of the lower drum.
